      Retired Lexington Business Man Dies

      James Edward Bassett, 80, of 431 Fayette park, retired Lexington business man, died late yesterday afternoon at his home after a long illness.
      A native of Lexington, Mr. Bassett was born Nov. 18, 1860, the son of the late Elizabeth Slaughter and Squire Bassett.
      He received his early education in private schools of the city and was graduated from Transylvania College.
      Mr. Bassett was married to Miss Katherine Stanhope on May 4, 1886.
      In 1882 he joined his father in business in the firm of S. Bassett and Sons and later succeeded his father as president of the Fayette National bank. In recent years he was connected with the firm of J. W. Stoll and Company.
      He was lifelong member of the Second Presbyterian church and was an elder in the church for many years.
      Mr. Bassett is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Irwin N. Lee and Miss Katherine Bassett, both of Lexington; one son, J. Edward Bassett Jr.; a grandson, J. Edward Bassett III, and a sister, Miss Anna Bassett, all of Lexington.
      Funeral services will be conducted at the home at 4 o?clock Monday afternoon with Dr. T.W. Rainey, pastor of the Mt. Horeb Presbyterian church, officiating.

      Disposing of Property of the Late Mr. S. Bassett
      The will of the late Mr. S. Bassett, of this city, was offered for probate.
      After providing for the payment of just debts and funeral expenses, the entire estate is divided equally among his surviving children, Mr. J.E. Bassett, Mrs. Emma Bassett McClymonds, Miss Ann Bassett, Miss Elizabeth Threlkeld, daughter of Frances Bassett Threlkeld; Mrs. R.O. Kirkwood, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. W.N. Offutt, of this city, the last two being daughters of Elizabeth Bassett Scott.
      The will provides for the conduct of the business of S. Bassett & Sons for a period of six months following the death of the testator.
      His son, Mr. J.E. Bassett, is named as executor, and Mr. Geo. W. Darnall and the late Judge J.R. Morton are witnesses of the signature.

      S. Bassett and Sons
      S. Bassett and Sons, Lexington's oldest and largest shoe store, points with pride to a record of 61 years of successful merchandising, placing it in the front rank of pioneer business concerns in Central Kentucky.
      The store was founded in 1859 by S. Bassett in a sales room near the present location at 238 West Main street. The firm of S. Bassett and Sons was formed in 1880 by Squire Bassett, Slaughter Bassett and J.E. Bassett when the store was moved to its present location.
      For the last seven years the management has been in the hands of John Lancaster, who became an employee in 1901. Improvements made with the time have made the store one of the most modern and complete in Kentucky. Several thousand pairs of shoes and boots are always in stock and the store is well equipped with all modern conveniences.

      Bassett And Sons Add Two New Firm Members
      J.W. Lancaster Jr., and Irwin N. Lee Now Active in Shoe Business
      J.W. Lancaster, Jr., and Irwin N. Lee have been admitted as members of the firm of S. Bassett and Sons, shoe dealers, 238 West Main Street, it was announced yesterday. Mr. J.E. Bassett, who is president of the Fayette National Bank, and senior member of the firm, will retain an active interest in the business.
      Both Mr. Lancaster and Mr. Lee have been with the firm of which they now become active and directing members. Mr. Lancaster has been connected with the business, which was founded more than sixty years ago by Squire Bassett, for more than 29 years, and since the death of Mr. Bassett has been manager of the sales department and has been associated with J.E. Bassett in the buying. Mr. Lancaster before coming to his present firm was with John W. Lancaster, Sr., who was many years the manager of the shoe firm of H.P. Lancaster.
      Mr. Lee, who is Mr. Bassett's son-in-law, has had long experience in Atlanta and other cities. He formerly was a member of the firm of the Thorpe-Lee Company, men's furnishings, now R.S. Thorpe and Sons.
      The business will continue to be conducted under the name of the founder, S. Bassett and Sons. In existence for 66 years, the firm is a landmark in Lexington business. The shoe store is one of the largest in Central Kentucky.
