- OBITUARY: Death of S.W. Bassett
The sad intelligence was received by a dispatch today of the death, at Chicago, of Mr. Schuyler W. Bassett, long a resident here and for several years engineer at the Water Works. Deceased went to Chicago a few months ago and was connected with the Watson Stone Co., of that city, until his death. Mr. H. Watson, President of the company, was at Chicago last Friday and Mr. Bassett was then some what indisposed with lung trouble and biliousness, but expected to be out in a few days as his health seemed to be improving. Mrs. Bassett removed with the household goods to Chicago, July 5th, her husband acoompanying her, he having came down for that purpose. Deceased left a brother, Mrs. S.C. Bassett, and a nephew, Mr. Albert E. Bassett, to mourn his death. He was a member of Alton Lodge No. 177, A.O.U.W. and was a very highly esttemed by his brethren of the order, as well as by all others to whom he was known. The funeral will take place in this city, from the Congregational Church. Alton Telegraph 21 July 1887.
OBITUARY: Funeral of S.W. Bassett
The body of Mr. Schuyler W. Bassett was brought here on the 7 o'clock E & A train this morning and taken directly to the Congreational Church, where the funeral took place at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. H.S Mills officiating. Hte hyms sung were "How tender is thy Hand" and "Jesus while our hearts are bleeding". The bearers, Select Knights, A.O.U.W. were Messrs. Richard Galbathly, Thomas Hall, Joshua Dixon, Walton Rutledge, Robert Curdle, A.E. Erbeck. In addition to relatives already mentioned deceased left a venerable mother, in feeble health, to whom his death was a sad blow. Alton Telegraph 23 July 1887.
