Dropped Dead By His Desk
When young Thomas Bassett paid his usual visit this morning to the office of his father, 418 Mining Exchange building, he nearly fainted upon opening the door. On the floor in a heap, where he had fallen from his desk chair, lay his father, Thomas E. Bassett, coal operator and dealer in coal properties, dead. Heart failure was the cause.
The little boy, aged 12 years, pushed open the door and cried, ?Hello, papa,? but the words choked him. His father was growing cold. Frantically the child tried to arouse the man, but realized that he could not. With tears flowing down his cheeks, he went out, notified the elevator pilots and janitors and ran for W. T. Perkins, a family friend who, in turn, notified the coroner and summoned Mrs. Bassett. The latter telephoned from the family residence at Colfax avenue and York street to the drug store in the building and heard from William Mayo, a clerk, that her husband was dead. She rushed to the scene and there collapsed. The body had been removed,.
Mr. Bassett has been in Denver for fourteen years, engaged in handling coal lands and operating coal mines. A few days ago he returned from a trip to the southern part of the state, where he worked unusually hard. On Friday morning, accompanied by his wife, he called on the family of Mr. Perkin s at 1563 St. Paul Street. Mr. Perkins remarked as they left that his friend looked ill, but Mr. Bassett had not complained.
His family consists of a wife, three boys and two girls, the eldest being 14 years old.
