Mrs. Lillian Wright Bassett
Mrs. Lillian Wright Bassett, widow of the late Doctor John Nelson Bassett,
passed away at the home of her son, Harry, in Rochester, Monday, July t
eighth. Several years ago Mrs. Bassett became seriously afflicted with
neuritis that resulted in much pain and growing feebleness. About three years
ago it was thought unwise for her longer to live by herself, and so she went to
her son's home in Rochester where he and his good wife tenderly cared for her,
everything possible being done to relieve her suffering and make peaceful her
last days. The remains were brought to Canton last Wednesday and the funeral
was held on Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, Rev. John Erickson,
the pastor, officiating, assisted by Dr. Payson. Burial was beside her
husband in Fairview.
Lillian Wright was born in Canton, January 31, 1853, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. William Wright, and with the exception of the three years in Rochester,
had lived here her entire life. When a young woman, for some years she was an
efficient teacher in the Canton schools. On June 22, 1881, she was united in
marriage with Doctor John Nelson Bassett, a most prominent and successf
physician here for a quarter of a century. Greatly to the regret of the
entire community, Doctor Bassett passed away in 1906. During most of their
married life they lived in the house which stood where the Canton High School
now stands.
Mrs. Bassett was a somewhat remarkable woman in many ways. In a wide
acquaintance, extending over many years, the writer recalls no one of whom it
may more truly be said than of Mrs. Bassett, "She looked well to the ways of
her household and ate not the bread of idleness." Her house, with everything
in it, was always spotless. And yet, notwithstanding this devotion to her
home, she found time for much public service. She was gifted with a strong
personality, marked executive ability and fine judgement, and she was never
too busy to use her talents for the public good. For many years she was much
interested in the Order of the Eastern Star and was the efficient worthy
matron for some time. Much of the success of the Order in those days was due
to her consecrated efforts. Her interest in the Order was not limited to her
home town, but she frequently went abroad in its service.
Mrs. Bassett's only living issue is the son, Harry, a younger son having
passed away in early childhood. Many of the friends who knew her and worked
with her in her active days have passed on, but those who remain hold her in
grateful remembrance and send to the son and daughter-in-law heartfelt
sympathy.
