New Years Dinners Family Reunions
Oliver C. Bassett Family
Oliver C. Bassett and wife, two of the pioneer and sturdy citizens of Shelby county, inaugurated the system of a big dinner each New Year for their children and grandchildren. Now that father and mother have passed away the children are keeping the delightful custom and it is a joyous occasion each New Year?s when this splendid family meets. The big dinner this year was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Bassett, two and a half miles south of Waldron.
Thos present were John R. Bassett, of Van Buren township; Charles Bassett, wife and child, Harry Logan and family, of Greenfield; County Clerk Otto Coyle and wife, Otto Harris, wife and children, and Mrs. Havey Wilkerson, daughter of John R. and wife, Ollie C. Bassett, wife and four children, of Waukesha, Wis.
Then comes sons and families of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Bassett: Herbert Bassett, wife and two sons, Ernest Bassett, wife and four children, and W.V> Bassett, wife and child of Kokomo. All were related except Joseph Dehority, who lives with Mr. and Mrs. Bassett, and he had as big a time as anybody.
Two big turkeys graced the table and there were other meats and delicious viands in abundance. Everyone had a grand good time and all look forward to the next New Year?s dinner, which will be the 25th. There were only four of the older generation present, John R. Bassett and wife and Marshall Bassett and wife. In all there were 47 present and they sure did justice to the splendid feast and social festivities.

Bassett Monroney Israel
Marshall built and lived in a house north of Shelbyville in 1908. He
next moved to a farm south of Waldron in 1914. He was a farmer until moving
into Waldron. He then moved to a house in Waldron located on Main Street in
1923. He moved once again to a house right behind the United Methodist Church
in Waldron on Columbia Street in 1927. Senorah died after an extended illness
of consumption (TB) on 17 Mar 1932. The funeral took place in the church right
next door. Marshall moved to Kokomo in 1936 to live with his son Ernest
Bassett. Ralph Bassett and Charlie Streavel went back to Waldron to sell the
furniture and house of Marshall Bassett. Marshall lived with his son
Ernest for 18 years until 1953. Two weeks before his death, he mov
Kokomo nursing home where he died on 17 July 1953.

Mr. Bassett 94, Dies in Kokomo
Funeral is Monday for Former Resident
Marshall Bassett, 94, former county resident, died in Kokomo nursing
home Friday at 1:15 p.m. Death was attributed to complication
Born in Shelby County Sept. 1, 1858, he was the son of Oliver a
Elizabeth (Monroney) Bassett. He was united in marriage in 1880 with No
Israel, who preceded him in death several years ago.
Three sons were born to the union, two of whom survive, W.O. Bassett
of Phoenix, Ariz., and Earnest of Kokomo. Rev. Herbert D. Bassett di
1943. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three
great - great grandchildren.
Mr. Bassett had lived in the county his entire life until moving to
Kokomo about 15 years ago. A retired farmer, he was a member of the Waldron
Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at the Ewing Mortuary Monday at 10:30
a.m. with burial in Little Marion cemetery. After 2:00 p.m. Sunday friends may
call at the mortuary.

Marshall Bassett
Marshall Bassett, 94, who made his home with his son, Ernest Bassett,
1442 Home Ave., died at 1:15 p.m. Friday after an illness of only a few days.
Had he lived until Sept. 1 he would have been 95.
Mr. Bassett was a native of Shelby County where most of his life was
spent. He was married Jan. 8, 1880 to Nora Israel. She died 21 years ago and a
few years later he came to this city to make his home.
Besides the son with whom he lived there is another son, W.O. Bassett
of Phoeniz, Arizona. A third son, the Rev. H.D. Bassett is deceased. He leaves
nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great
grandchildren. Six brothers and sisters preceded him in deat
Mr. Bassett was a member of the Methodist Church at Waldron, Indiana.
The body has been taken to the Ewing Mortuary, Shelbyville. Funeral
services will be held there at 10:30 a.m. Monday.
