- Family information at this time is sketchy about the second wife. Anna was dying from cancer. Martha took care of the children while Anna was dying and Edward was conceived. Martha then left for her home in Brown County to
have Edward. He married Martha several weeks after his first wife died. Mortimer committed suicide several months after his second marriage and then Martha returned once again to Brown County.

Comes now, Daniel L. Wilson, Guardian ad litem for Mary Bassett, Auda Bassett,
and Calvin Bassett defendants in the above entitled cause for answer to
plaintiffs complaint denies each and every allegation therein, continued and
asks that strick proof be made.

I, Martha A. Bassett, widow of Mortimer Bassett, in consideration that
I may hold the following property absolutely as my own To wi
One black horse, one bay horse, one farm wagon, one red and whi
spotted cow, one bedstead and bed and bedding therefor, part of the dishes
and all of the chickens, the same having been the property of husband at his
decease do for the consideration aforesaid and from love and respect for the
said deceased and his children hereby release unto Minerva Perry, Mary
Bassett, Auda Merl Bassett, and Claudie C. Bassett all by right to all and any
other property of said Deceased including his real estate which is located in
Shelby County, Indiana and describes as follows to wit: the north west quarter
of the south half of the east half of the northeast quarter of section 12 in
township (13) thirteen north in range 6 east containing 10 acres more or less.
I hereby charge said property with the funeral expenses of said decent and by
the acceptance here of said children or their representative shall come liable
for said expense.
I hereby waive all my right in all of said deceased property, real and
personal except that retained by me as above, and waive and release my claims
to the same, and all my interest there in as widow of said decedents including
my statutory allowance of $500 and all other interest I have or may be
entitled herein above forth.

Bassett rites to be held Thursday
Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Bassett, who died Tuesday at Madison,
will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the home of the son, Edward
Bassett, 574 West Taylor street. The Rev. Clarence Hager, pastor of the
Calvary Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Miller cemetery,
southwest of this city.

Mrs. Bassett dies at Madison Tuesday
Funeral of Native of County Not Arranged
Mrs. Mattie Bassett, age sixty-nine, a native of Shelby county, died
Tuesday at Madison. She had lived her entire life in this county until several
months ago. A son, Edward Bassett, of 574 West Taylor street, is the on
survivor. Mr. Bassett preceded his wife in death. The body will be brought
here for services and burial. Complete arrangements will be announced later.
