Charlotte E. Thornton - Charlotte E. Thornton, nee Bassett, was born in Decorah, Iowa, on December 25, 1855, and died at the home of her son, LeRoy Beason, in Council Bluffs on Friday, July 15, 1925, at the age of 69 years, 6 months and 22 days. Her death came after a long illness and suffering from creeping paralysis. Her first marriage was with Joseph Beason and to this union two sons were born, one, Amasa, died a few years ago. W. LeRoy, the other son by this marriage, lives in Council Bluffs and it was with him that she made her home for two years before her death.
She was later married to T.D. Thornton and lived on what is now known as the J.F. Meyer farm near Thurman. Five children were born to this union. Oris and Floyd, th two sons, and a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Grier, all living in Council Bluffs, two of the children having died in youth.
Later the Thornton family moved to Sidney where they resided for a number of years. Mr. Thornton built the Sidney opera house when he was past the age of eighty and after his death the family managed the house until 1911, when the family moved to Council Bluffs. Mrs. Thornton was a member of the Christian church at Sidney. They body was brought to Sidney for burial Sunday, July 19, and a short service was held at the cemetery conducted by Rev. N.R. Miles, pastor of the Presbyterian church.
