W. H. SHEPHERD

An old and Valued Resident of Hamilton Died at Burlingt
Mr. W. H. Shepherd died in Burlington, at the home of his son, Charles
Shepherd, Thursday evening October 10th in his seventy-ninth year. He w
married to Miss Ruth Bassett September 29th, 1859, and their married life was
a very happy one. To this union was born eleven children, six boys and five
girls all of whom are living and whose names and places of residences are as
follows:
John Shepherd, Vandalia, Illinois; Odgen Shepherd, Centralia,
Missouri; Robert and Ed Shepherd, Houston, Texas; Charles Shepherd,
Burlington, Iowa; James Shepherd, Tulare, California; Mrs. W.K. Howes, of West
Point, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Turner, Heppner, Oregon; Mrs. Orlando White, Palisade,
Colorado; Mrs. Sterling Beedle of Ladonia, Missouri and Mrs. Henry Harrison of
Hamilton. A brother, Joseph Shepherd, and one sister, Eliza Shepherd live at
Ursa, Illinois.
The passing of our good brother from this life was peaceful and quiet.
He was ready to go, he longed to go. Since the death of his wife not quite a
year ago he has been restless. She was the subject of his thoughts and
conversations.
A few years ago Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd celebrated the 50th anniversary
of their married live. The twain had stood together like two trees of t
forest with interlocked branches. Side by side in life's great battle they had
fought the good fight and won the day. The old home is now no more. It is a
sad thing, even at manhood and womanhood to become fatherless and motherless.
No one but God can make up for the loss of a father's counsel and a mother's
tenderness. Hope thou is God. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh
in the morning."
Our brother was a life long member of the Christian Church as w
also his wife.
The services were held at the Christian church Sunday afternoon at
2:30, the Rev. J. Ross Miller, formerly pastor of the Christian church,
preached a very helpful sermon on the Resurrection, H.C. Parsons assisted in
the service.
The choir was composed of Mrs. Hurley Moore and Miss Goldie Berry. The
hymns were selected by the deceased some time before his death. "Beautiful
Isle of Somewhere" and "Asleep in Jesus". These were the same numbers that
were sang at the funeral of Mrs. Shepherd who died December 7, 191
The members of the family who were present were Chas. Shepherd and
wife of Burlington, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Howes, West Point, Iowa; Mr. and
Mrs. S. P. Beddle, of Ladonia, Missouri; O.D. Shepherd and family, of
Centralia, Missouri; and Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Harrison.
The pall bearers were J.P. Guthrie, J.H. Berry, D.L. Conklin, W.
Kiser, M. Champeau and Samuel Howes. The interment was Oakwood cemeter
Those who attended the funeral from a distance were the followi
nieces and nephews of Mr. Shepherd; Mr. and Mrs. George Laughlin, Mrs. Dudley
Laughlin and Mrs. George Groves all from Adams county.
