Pioneer Matron Dies in Carmel
The death on Saturday of Mrs. Carrie Hazeltine Bassett, 86, widow of the late James M. Bassett, a colorful figure in the early Oakland days, was reported to friends here today.
Mrs. Bassett, a native of Grantville, N.Y., died in Carmel where she had lived for the past 20 years.
She and her husband came to Oakland in 1875 shortly after their marriage. Bassett, who was known in the old days as ?Old Pard.? was a city councilman in the early 90?s and was associated politically with John L. David, with whom he organized and operated the Davie Ferry, a passenger and freight route to San Francisco by way of the estuary. He died in Oakland in 1903.
Surviving Mrs. Bassett are two sons, Bernard H. of Los Angeles and Willard K. of San Francisco; a daughter, Dorothy Q. Bassett of Carmel, a sister, Mrs. Frederick H. Clark of Oakland; and four grandchildren, James M. Bassett of San Francisco, John J. Bassett of Oakland, Mrs. Wilma McKay of Monterey and Oliver C. Bassett of Carmel. There are five great-grandchildren.
