Marvin Floyd Bassett
Marvin Floyd Bassett "Mellow Marv", 79, of Marion, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at Village Ridge Assisted Living in Marion. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Calvin Sinclair Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion and one hour before services Friday at the church. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton. Military honors: Vinton American Legion Post 57.
Survivors include his children, Kathy (Donald) Zimmerman of Marion, Cindy Dreyer of Tipton, Kim (Larry) Hathaway of Cedar Rapids and Craig (Donna) Bassett of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Linda Cole.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, on July 3, 2011; his parents; and siblings, Geraldine (Lloyd ?Tag?) Lyons and Doris (Sherman) French.
Marvin was born July 31, 1932, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Charles Floyd and Hazel Mae (Detrick) Bassett. On May 7, 1955, he was united in marriage to Joyce Elaine Young in Marion. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, obtaining the rank of Commissarian 2nd Class. Marvin was a machinist at Iowa Manufacturing for 41 years, retiring in 1996.
He enjoyed his pets, and camping, especially at Sugar Bottom.
Marvin was a loving father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
