Obituary: Randolph NY Register, December 25, 1903
      J. B. TORRANCE DEAD
He Had Lived in Randolph all the Years of his Life
      WAS A PROSPEROUS FARMER
A Hard Working Man Who Had His Greatest Pleasure in the Successful Conduct of his Business

Joel Bassett Torrance died at his home in this town Tuesday afternoon from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy. He was afflicted with the stroke about two weeks ago and had been gradually sinking to the time of his death.

Mr. Torrance was born October 28, 1839 upon the place he died, and during his life lived always in Randolph.

He was son of Garwood M. Torrance and grandson of Timothy M. Torrance who settled on the homestead nearly ninety years ago. Since that date the Torrance farm has been owned and occupied by members of that family.

Joel Torrance was educated at Randolph Academy and afterward enlisted in Company H, 154th New York volunteers, with which company he saw three years service in the war of the Rebellion.

Mr. Torrance was three times married: his first wife was Ella Wallace of Perrysburg, Ohio, who died thirty years ago; in 1876 he married Hattie Churchill of Ellington, N.Y., who died about ten years ago. Some six years ago he married Mrs. Rhoda Churchill, who survives. He is also survived by his brother Mitchell T. Torrance and two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Foster and Mrs. Rena Gilbert.

As one of the hard working prosperous farmers of this section, Mr. Torrance will be remembered by a large circle of acquaintances. He has maintained his 250 acre farm at a high state of cultivation and found his greatest pleasures in the successful conduct of his business.
