Bessette, Old Settler Old Resident Died Tuesday in 93rd Year; Lived Here 88 Years In the passing of Leon Bessette, which occurred yesterday afternoon at 1 o’clock at his home, 39 Waterhouse street, in his ninety—third year, Plattsburgh has lost one of its few remaining early settlers. More than 88 years ago Mr. Bessette’s father moved to Plattsburg from Chambley, Canada, and kept an inn here for many years. Leon Bessette has been a living landmark of this place ever since it was known to many of the odler people. He is survived by twon sons, John Bessette of Plattsburgh, George Bessette of Elizabethtown, five daughters, Mrs. John Zuke, Mrs. Arthur Lecuyer, Mrs. Joseph E. Gravel, Miss Elmira Bessette, all of Plattsburgh, and Mrs. Zeb LaForce, of Cohoes. Mrs. Bessette enjoyed good health until two weeks ago when bladder trouble set in, but death was due, it is believed, to ailments incident to age. Funeral services will be held at 9 o’clock Thursday morning from Our Lady of Victory church. Interment will be in St. Peter’s cemetery. Mr. Bessette possessed a remarkable memory, could clearly related events that occurred in this section many years ago, even before the Civil War. He could well describe the appearance of Plattsburg 86 years ago. He has watched Plattsburg grow from little more than a hamlet to its present size. He was an endless source of local information and history. Mr. Bessette was kwown for his amiable disposition, his kindness toward everybody and as a man who led an active life filled with good deeds. He was a devout Christian and was liked by all who knew him. His passing in the community in which he dwelt so long will be felt as a great loss.
