Augustus Bass
Tuesday, December 11th, 1883, Mr. Augustus Bass, brother of Hon. J.S.P. Bass, died at the residence of the latter on Stillwater, aged nearly 76 years. He was born in Columbus, Tennessee, February 5th, 1808, moving with his parents to Boone county, Mo., in the year 1819, where he lived until he reached his majority, when he returned to his native State, making Nashville his home, and where he married Miss Susan Hamilton, who died in the year 1849, leaving an only son. He was made a member of Nashville Lodge No. 2, I.O.O.F., in 1846, and taking his withdrawal card, started for California soon after the death of his wife, and arriving in San Francisco in 1850, residing in the State every since. He was an exemplary man, upright and exact in all his dealings, and generous to a fault. His only son, J.L. Bass, was at his bedside during his last moments. The funeral of the deceased took place Thursday, and was conducted by Rev. I.N. Waterman, who let the procession of nineteen carriages to the grave in Redding cemetery, J.N. Chappell, Hiram Derby, John George, B. Conroy, E. G. Parker and C.C. Bush acting as pall bearers. Rev. I.N. Waterman?s remarks at the grave were very appropriate, following which they laid the remains of Augustus Bass away, while his spirit has gone to join the innumerable throng on the other side.
