Bassett, Dr. Wallace H. - Dr. Wallace H. Bassett passed away quietly in his sleep at his home in Montrose, Colorado, on April 1, 2009, with his daughter by his side. Wallace was born to Wallace and Charlotte Bounds Bassett in Sulphur Springs, Texas, on October 9, 1913. At the age of 5 he moved to Dallas, graduating from Sunset High School. After graduation he attended Baylor University, earning a Doctor of Medicine. He prided himself on being an "old-fashioned" doctor, often making house calls in the middle of the night, and helping hundreds of patients who loved him dearly. Wallace was also a proud veteran, serving as the Army Chief of Laboratory Service in various hospitals in the U.S., France, and England. It was during his time at Camp Hale that he fell in love with the Colorado Mountains, and he and his family spent many happy times at their vacation home in Ouray, Colorado. Wallace married the love of his life, Helen Barnes, on March 4, 1939, and they were happily married for 62 years, until her passing on April 8, 2001 in Dallas. He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his sense of humor, and kind spirit. Wallace was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; daughter, Susan Bassett; sisters, Verona Olson, Elaine Mayfield, and Margaret Johnson. He leaves behind his loving daughter, Jennifer Bassett Burdick of Ridgway, Colorado. A celebration of Wallace's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Presbyterian Village North, Joyce Hall, with Dr. Bill Webb officiating. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Wallace's name to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Hospice organization of your choice.
