A.C. Bass, 58, Dies Suddenly Thursday
Highway Department Inspector Had Been Candidate in the Primary
Adren C. Bass, 58, unsuccessful candidate for the republican nomination for secretary of state, died suddenly at 7 a.m. Thursday at his home, 617 S. 25th. He lay down on a sofa and in a few minutes was dead. He was a brother of the late Dr. T.W. Bass, one time state treasurer, who died while resting in his office last August.
Mr. Bass was virtually a life-long Nebraskan, having come to this state in his first year from Evansville, Ill. His first Nebraska home was near Phillips. The family next lived on a farm near Anselmo, in Custer county, and he attended grade school at Broken Bow and high school in Grand Island.
From 1900 to 1919 Mr. Bass farmed near Anselmo, and the next four or five years operated a hardware business in that town and at mason City. He traveled for a Lincoln wholesale houser and for four years published the Shubert Citizen at Shubert.
Mr. Bass was appointed an inspector in the state highway department during the McMullen administration and had been with the department for 15 years. He had never held public office, and his filing last August was the first on the republican ticket for the post of secretary of state. he was a member of Lancaster lodge No. 54, A.F.& A.M.
Surviving are his wife, Bessie, and two sisters ? Mrs. Lillie Lewis of Arnold and Mrs. Rose Gray of Loveland, Colo.
Blames Heart Trouble.
?I am sure it was the election excitement which brought on the attack,? Mrs. Bas said. ?My husband was feeling low Tuesday night when the returns started to come in. He had a fainting spell Wednesday noon and felt poorly again this morning. He lay down on a sofa and I called a doctor, but he died shortly after the doctor came.?
Mrs. Bass said her husband knew his heart was bad when he filed for nomination last Aug. 11.

A.C. Bass Buried Here Saturday Afternoon
Burial services were held here Saturday afternoon for A.C. Bass, 57, who died in Lincoln suddenly Thursday morning. He was a former Custer county resident, a brother of the late Dr. T.W. Bass, and a brother of Mrs. John Lewis of Arnold.
A.C. bass was born at Evansville, Indiana in 1883. Coming to Nebraska he first lived at Phillips and later on a farm in Dale Valley west of Merna. He attended grade schools in Broken Bow and was graduated from the Grand Island high school. For a few years he farmed west of Anselmo and then with his brother operated a hardware store at Mason City. For the past fifteen years he has ben connected with the state highway department at Lincoln.
Funeral services were held in Lincoln at 9 A.M. Saturday morning, with the Masonic lodge in charge. he was chaplain of the Lincoln Masonic order. he is survived by his wife and two sisters.
Burial services here were in charge of Rev. W.A. Baldwin. Active pallbearers were M.M. Burkholder, E.L. Bennett, M.L. Nichols, C.S. McGraw, N.C. Cole and F.A. Anderson.
Honorary pallbearers were A.C. Tilley, A.T Lobdell, R.J. Boyd, R.N. Riddle, M.B. Jones, Chris Rohwer, A.W. Saville, Robt. McKeen, M.E. Shaffer, Hugh Winchester and A.E. Nooman.
A.C. Bass had been a republican primary candidate for secretary of state, and his death was attributed to a heart attack, brought about by excitement following the election count.
