Tragedy At Auburn, Alabama
Mr. N.J. Bass Found Shot in His Store - Supposed to Be Suicide
Auburn, Alabama - November 2 - N.J. Bass was found shot to death this morning in the Gullatte Store room.
It is the general opinion here that the deadly wound was self inflicted.
Tobe Betts of Opelika, on entering the store to call on Mr. Bass, was the first person to discover the tragedy.
Although it appears that no one heard the report of the pistol, it is quite certain that the deadly shot was fired about 9:30 this morning.
Just a few weeks ago Judge W. B. Gullatte committed suicide in the same store room and it appears that Mr. Bass used the same pistol and stood very near the same spot in the store where Judge Gullatte’s body was found when he put a bullet through his brain this morning.
Mr. Bass had purchased the stock of merchandise, formerly owned by Judge Gullate, and was conducting the business, having moved his family here about a month ago.
N.J. Bass was a member of one of the best known families of Lee county. He was a son of tax collector W.M. Bass of this city, and leaves a wife and three children, two little boys and a little daughter. Three brothers, E.P. and Marion Bass, of this city and T. Bass, of Beulah, and one sister, Miss Cora Bass, and many other relatives are bowed in sorrow today on learning of this tragic death.
