On Monday last the death occurred of Mr. Thomas Bassett, of Ascot Valley, Mount Ida. Though 76 years of age, Mr. Bassett had led an active life up to within a couple of days of his demise, his death being accelerated as the result of an accident sustained recently whilst supervising harvesting operations upon his farm. The late Mr. Bassett was the oldest resident pioneer landholder in the neighborhood, and during his avocation of a farmer and grazier, but by thrift and the application of unbounded energy he had carried his undertaking through with success. A widow, two sons and six daughters are left to mourn their loss. With the exception of one son, the remainder of the family are married and settled in various parts of the State. The interment took place at Griffith Cemetery on Wednesday. The deceased had, by his genial manner and straightforward honesty of purpose, commanded the respect of everyone in the district.
