Joe Bassett Dies at 65
Joseph Bassett, 65, co-owner with his wife of the Wigwam Cafe on Second Avenue, died early Monday morning in University Hospital, Seattle.
Mr. Bassett was stricken with leukemia last spring and had been under constant medical treatment since. He entered University Hospital in April and returned home to continue treatment. He was re-admitted to University Hospital last week.
Born in Bordeaux, France, in 1900, Mr. Bassett was well known in the Fairbanks area. He came to the United States in 1906 and to Alaska a few years later.
Mr. Bassett is survived by his widow, Monte: and by five children - Joseph Powell, Darlene Jensen, Debrah, Dari and Dal. The couple also are parents to five adopted children.
Mr. Bassett and his wife lived in the Fairbanks area for over 18 years. He was a chef with the District Early Warning System in the Arctic for several years.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Fairbanks Memorial Chapel.
