- Louis Bassett's obituary states "He was born in France 72 years ago and came to America about 50 years ago". Louis immirated through New Orleans in the 1850's and settled first in Illinois, then moved to Nevada, then back to Illinois, and then moved on to Adams County, Nebraska. According to family legend, Victoria Courcier was sent from France to marry Louis in an arranged marriage.
In 1863, Louis purchased 60 acres in Shelby County, Illinois from Amadee Somas at a cost of $422. In 1868, Louis purchased 80 acres in Christian County, Illinois from Elissee Malhoit of Assumption, Louisiana for $2,247.
