    Notes
    • Caleb Bassett was born about 1768 (EPB). He probably married about 1789. According to Scriven family papers, Caleb married Alice Scriven, daughter of William and Mercy (Lewis) Scriven. Alice was born 10 Feb 1750 in Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island. (Vital Records, Town Mtgs of Westerly, RI, 1745-1778, Bk. 3, pg 277). William Scriven died in Rennselaer County, New York in 1818. Many of his children married in Rhode Island, which is where Caleb is supposed to be from also. This Scriven family paper lists children of Caleb and Elsie as "James, George, Polly, Fanny, etc". He was probably in Stephentown, Rensselear County, New York in 1790. Both sons James and George are land grantors between 1800-1810 in Enosburg, Franklin County, Vermont, with Caleb a witness.
George Bassett and James Bassett, "both of Sheldon, Franklin County, Vermont", were grantees of property purchased in 1802 in Enosburg, Vermont. George purchased for $358 Lot 188 (113 acres) on the north side of the Missiquoi River on 11 Oct 1802 (Land Record vol 3, p.44) On 4 Dec 1802, James purchased for $166 50 acres of property abutting George (Land Rcord vol 4, p. 41-42). George took a mortgage from grantor Stephen House at the time of purchase and appears to hvae paid off this mortgage 20 Sep 1810 (LR 6/249) and sold the property on 17 Dec 1810 (LR5/175). James appears to have sold his property 5 Oct 1805 (LR4/226). Caleb was witness to this latter transaction.
There is also a Susannah Bassett who purchased property in Enosburg 1 Oct 1810 (LR 6/76) from Retip Peck and on 6 Dec 1815 (LR6/249) sold it back to Peck.
Enosburg Town Meeting records for 4 Sep 1804 show James and George "qualified as freemen." On 1 Mar 1808, George was appointed one of the highway surveyors and also fence viewer.
