Roy H. Bassett Will Share In Madrid Man’s Estate

Under the terms of the will of the late Heman Howe of Madrid, who died
quite suddenly a few days ago, Roy H. Bassett of Canton, a relative, wi
share in the estate which has an estimated value of $25,000 or upwards. After
making a Madrid Church a bequest of $1,000, and a few minor bequests, one-half
of the remainder of the estate goes to Roy H. Bassett of Canton, and the other
remaining portion is to be divided equally between The United Helpers Home of
Ogdensburg and the Corporation of the Salvation Army of the State of New York.
A sister of Mr. Howe, grandmother of Mr. Bassett, Mrs. Herns, spent
the late portion of her life in the home of her grandson, Mr. Bassett, and the
kindly care and devotion paid to his sister, no doubt influenced Mr. Howe in
making Mr. Bassett one of the beneficiaries under his will.
Mr. Howe was long a successful farmer residing in the vicini
Madrid, and had spent his late years in the village of Madrid. Other members
of his family, including Mrs. Howe, passed away a short time ago so in the end
      he was alone.

      Mr. Arthur Bassett, Tacoma, Washington

Dear Mr. Bassett, I was much interested in your letter received today. At one
time a John McIlvine of Rockland Mass – 457 Liberty St. – started to trace the
Bassett family. He informed me that the First Bassett to come into this
section from New England was Daniel Bassett. Born in 1792 and came to this
section and married in 1812 and again in 1819. He had two sons Daniel a
Artemas. Artemas born about 1824 had a son John born about 1843 or 1844. John
had two sons William Leroy Bassett (father of Mrs. Shepherd) and Frank Bassett
(my father). Artemas moved over near Malone in Franklin County which is 54
miles from here while John located in St. Lawrence County. My grandfather John
Bassett, died before I was born so I never saw him. I believe if you would
write to Will Bassett, Norwood, NY he might add to the information that have
given you. At one time Mrs. Eva Gibson, Grove St., Malone, NY had records of
all the Bassetts that came into Franklin County. I have not heard from Mrs.
Gibson for years, but believe she is still alive and living in Malone.
      Sincerely yours, Roy H. Bassett.
