      BRIDGEWATER, Nov. 28 ? J. Gardner Bassett, aged 64 years, died today at his home on Summer street. Mr. Bassett became ill a week ago, rallied slightly after a surgical operation, and then suffered a relapse.
      Mr. Bassett was born here, the son of Josiah L. Bassett. He was graduated from the Bridgewater high and normal schools, and taught for several years in Fall River. In 1871 he went to the Bigelow grammar school in South Boston, and in 1896 was appointed master. He attracted attention in 1902 by abolishing the use of the rattan in the school and introduced a system of ?moral suasion.? He held South Boston school posts 40 years in all, retiring last January.
      Locally Mr. Bassett was noted for his many varied business and professional activities. He was a member of the school board for nine years. He was a trustee of Bridgewater academy and of the Bridgewater Cemetery Association. For several years he was the proprietor of the Pawnee House at Oak Bluffs, and he had interests in the Bridgewater Brick Company. He was a past master of Fellowship Lodge, A.F.& A.M. Mr. Bassett leaves a widow and two children, Mrs. Norman S. Pratt of Newton and William H. Bassett of this town.
