Mrs. James Bassett Dies At Her Home,
Ill But Short Time
Mrs. Bessie A. Wickens, wife of James Bassett, well known auctioneer
died at her home in Stafford Avenue, Monday afternoon, after an illness of but
one week’s duration, with complications.
Mrs. Bassett was born in the town of Marshall, November 26, 1858, a
daughter of the late Frances Dobell and Leonard Wickens. She was married to
Mr. Bassett in that town February 8, 1877, and lived there on a farm with her
husband until 25 years ago, when the couple moved to this village. She was a
member of Grace Episcopal church of this village. She was a quiet, unassuming
woman and was held in highest respect and esteem by a wide circle of friends.
Besides her husband, she leaves one sister, Mrs. Herbert Cashy,
Rochester; two brothers, George D. Wickens, Rochester, and Henry W. of this
village.
The funeral was held from the home yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
The Reverent Winslow Clark officiated.
The funeral was largely attended. Those from out of town were, Mr. and
Mrs. H.B. Cash, Mr. and Mrs. George D. Wickens and Herbert Partis and family of
Rochester; H.A. Burr and family of Whitesboro; James Wilburt and family, Mrs.
Gugemus, Mrs. Beacraft and John D. Hughes of Utica; Mr. and Mrs. William
Bourgess, Miss Pray, Mrs. Pickett and W.H. Brockway from Clinton; Mr. and Mrs.
Oliver Allen of Oriskany Falls; Mrs. Brownell and Miss Warren of Vernon; R. H.
Griffiths from Sauquoit, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Melvin of Sidney and Mrs. Lyons
and Mrs. Wilbur of Norwich.
