Stephen R. Bassett Was Thus Engaged Since Civil War
Had Been Secretary of National Editorial Associati
Stephen R. Bassett, former secretary of the National Editorial
Association, has died from heart disease at his home in New York city. He was
a native of Montour Falls, N.Y., and was sixty-five years old. When only
fourteen years old he joined the Fifth New York Cavalry and served until the
end of the Civil War. On his return from the war Mr. Bassett entered the
newspaper business and had been actively engaged in it since. For twenty years
Mr. Bassett had been editor and publisher of the Kissimmee Leader of Kissimmee,
Fla. Later he went to New York and was for a time connected with the Methodist
Book Concern. He was a Mason, a Knight of Phtyias, and a member of the Grand
Army of the Republic. A wife and daughter survive him.

Stephen R. Bassett, one time secretary of the National Editorial Association, died Sunday, March 24th, of heart disease at his home, No. 512 West 185thy street, New York city. Mr. Bassett was born sixty-five years ago at Montour Falls, N.Y., At the outbreak of the war, though only fourteen years old, he enlisted in the Fifth New York cavalry and served until the end of hostilities.
After the war Mr. Bassett went into the newspaper business in Iowa and later moved to Florida, where for twenty years he was editor and publisher of the Kissimmee Leader, of Kissimmee, Fla. Fifteen years ago he went to New York, where he was connected with the Methodist Book Concern. Mr. Bassett was a Mason, a Knight of Pythias and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Mr. Bassett is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Disbrow of New York, two sisters, Mrs. W.A.L. Martin of Montour Falls and Mrs. John C. Vernoy of Elmira; also a brother, Charles A. Bassett of Elmira. The funeral was held in New York city.
