Passing of Mrs. F.M. Bassett
Five Years of Suffering Ends in Death
Funeral Services Held at the Home
Corner of Pleasant and East Avenues Wednesday Afternoon
Death relieved the suffering of Mrs. F.M. Bassett last Sunday night. Five years ago last month Mrs. Bassett while driving alone from this place to the Western Association of the Seventh-day Baptists being held at Independence, had a partial stroke of apoplexy from which she never fully recovered. Since that time she has had four other distinct strokes, dying from the effects of the last one.
Marcella Crandall Bassett, youngest daughter of Barney and Eliza Crandall, was born in Whitesville, N.Y., Feb. 21, 1839, and died in Andover, N.Y., July 10, 1904, being four months and twenty-one days in her sixty-sixth year.
Back in the early fifties, and while a mere child, she gave her heart to God, was baptized and joined the Seventh-day Baptist church at Independence, N.Y., where ever since she has maintained a consistent membership. She was a musician (for her time) of more than ordinary ability, having a most remarkable sweet and powerful contralto voice and for nearly a score of years acted as chorister and organist of the Independence church, laboring earnestly to attune the hearts of men to the glory of God by the power of song.
She was married to Francis M. Bassett Sep. 20, 1862 and to whom were born eight children, one son and a pair of twin daughters having died in infancy. She now leaves to mourn her loss a husband, one son, Louis S. Bassett of Independence, Mrs. G.D. Friar of Richburg, Mrs. Geo. N. Bloss of Independence, Mrs. Park Rogers of Andover and Miss Florence, living with her father in Andover, besides two sisters, Mrs. Jeremiah Clarke and Mrs. D.D. Remington, both of Andover, and everybody that ever knew her.
Funeral services conducted by Rev. E.D. Van Horn, pastor of the Andover Seventh-day Baptist church, were held at the home, corner Pleasant and East Avenues Wednesday afternoon. The interment was made in the Independence Cemetery, the son and son-in-laws acting as pall bearers.
