- James had a carriage shop and was much interested in the science of mus
and became a musician of fine attainments and a composer of merit. He composed
and arranged music for his own band and many others and was also a teacher of
vocal music. He was called upon to furnish music for all occasions in southern
Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. In 1852 he organized a Cornet Band
in Wilmington, Vermont and kept it in full membership until 1862, the second
year of the rebellion and in consequence of many of the members enlisting into
the service of the government, the band disbanded.
He caught the gold fever and in Sep 1849 he sailed from Boston to San
Francisco, via Cape Horn where he arrived on 5 Apr 1850 and worked in placer
diggings until July of 1851. He then sailed for home via the Isthmus of Panama
and landed in Wilmington on 1 Oct 1851. In the following year, he commenced
the business of carriage and sleigh making and also carriage painting a
followed the same in connection with music until 1873. He then sold out his
business and removed to Bennington, Vermont, and there continued the sa
business until 1 Jul 1895 where at the age of 70, he met with a severe
accident that disabled him for life. He was living in 1901 with his son Hugh
M. Bassett.
