Mrs. Maria Adelaide Bassett
Mrs. Maria Adelaide Bassett, widow of Ellery E. Bassett, died Oct. 13
at the home of her son, Edwin F. Bassett, 10 Bigelow street, Cambridge. She
had reached the age of eighty-seven years, and up to the last few months
enjoyed good health with full use of her faculties. Mrs. Bassett belonged to
the old Porter family of Salem, and was born in that city, July 21, 181
the daughter of Captain Job Porter, who was engaged in the West India trade.
Besides him were two brothers, one, John Porter, who filled with distinction
many offices of trust and responsibility in Newburyport and established the
Globe Steam Mills of that city, of which he was for many years treasurer. The
other brother, Charles Porter of Haverhill, was for many years president of
the Merrimack Bank of that city, being succeeded in that office by a son and
grandson up to the present day.
Mrs. Bassett was a member of the Epsworth M.E. Church of Cambridge and
formerly, at different periods, had held membership in the Union Square M.E.
Church of Somerville and at Berkeley Temple, Boston, under Rev. Mr. Hamilton.
She is survived by three sons. Funeral service was held at the late residence
on Monday, Oct. 17.
