He had been a sufferer from Chronic Rheumatism for a year or two, but his fatal illness was only a few days and directly caused by hardening of the arteries as stated by the family physician, Dr. Handy. Born in Harwich, son of Stephen and Hepsabeth Bassett. Mr. Bassett made his duties as a public officer a matter of personal pride. He was fearless among evil doers and they learned to show proper respect as to their behavior in his presence. Law and order greatly benefited locally by his exercised authority. His ability and success as a detective was recognized many time in this section of the state, and no prosecution officer in the county was better known. Although exacting and imperative, he had a kind heart and was considerate and lenient whenever possible. It was characteristic of him after making an arrest to turn his attention to helping the culprit out of trouble. Surviving are sons: William H. Jr., Edgar, and Merton. Two sisters: Mrs. Hepsabeth Cahoon, Mrs. Abbie Cahoon, and a daughter Anna.
