HISTORY OF WESTERN NEW YORK
(I) William R. Bassett was born in Rhode Island, April 9, 1802, died
in the town of Kendall, Orleans county, New York, June 12, 1899. When a boy he
came to Unadilla Forks, Otsego county, New York, and in 1820 to Clarkson
Corners, Monroe county, where he learned the blacksmith's trade. This was his
home and place of business until 1829, when he came to Orleans county a
resumed his trade, being probably the first blacksmith to establish in the
town. In 1831 he removed to a farm near the lake shore, consisting of t
hundred acres purchased from the Holland Land Company. This he cleared and
cultivated, also erecting a shop where he carried on his business of smith. He
was a Democrat in politics, and served as supervisor in the years 1849-50-53-
54, and served as assessor. He was an active member of the Universalist church
and a man of high standing in his town. He married Olive Munger, of Bergen,
Genesee county, New York, born September 29, 1807, died March 19, 1877, in
Kendall. Children: 1. Chauncey, born May 4, 1830. 2. Edwin H., Octob
1832, died October, 1910. 3. Harriet, born 1834; married J.P. Mulfor
Kendall. 4. Charles L., of whom further. 5. Laura J., born May 26, 1838;
married A.W. Barnett. 6. Catherine C., born December 11, 1840; married Oscar
Munn. 7. Emily L., born March 29, 1843, died March, 1891; married Ira Bates.
8. Wallace W., born July 29, 1845. 9. Frank, born September 22, 1847; married
Jennie manley, born 1863, in Carlton; she died May 28, 1898, in Albion. He
followed farming all his active life on the old homestead and now liv
retired life in Albion. He is a Democrat and a Universalist. 10. Annie E.,
born June 27, 1850; married E.W. Nickerson.
