      H.B. Bassett, G.N. Railway Aide, Dies

      Homer B. Bassett, 68, assistant general superintendent of transportation for the Great Northern Railway, died yesterday in a hospital. He became ill last Saturday.
      Rose Croix funeral services will be at 11 o?clock Tuesday in Butterworth?s chapel.
      Mr. Bassett was an authority on rate structures and freight operations. In recent years he was in charge of freight-car supply in the company?s Western region.
      Mr. Bassett was assigned to his post after the Second World War and had made his home here since. He was trainmaster for the railway?s Spokane Division during the war.
      Since he began his Great Northern career in the Interbay Yard here in 1909, Mr. Bassett had worked in St. Paul, Portland and Vancouver, B.C. For ten years he was secretary to Ralph Budd and his son, John M. Budd, now president, to study the Russian railroad system.
      In the First World War, Mr. Bassett was a 1st lieutenant in the Army Transportation Corps. He designed a plan of coordinating European rail facilities to supply troops each night.
      Born in Travis County, Tex., Mr. Bassett attended the University of Illinois. He was a member of the Macalester Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite Bodies, both of St. Paul, and the Mayflower Society.
      Survivors are his wife, Mary, at their residence, 500 Wall St.; two daughters, Mrs. Herbert Gilkey, Spokane, and Mrs. William Gaston, Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Albert E. Bassett, Toronto; a sister, Minnie E. Bassett, Muskogee, Okla.; and five grandchildren.
      Butterworth?s Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
