William was a chaplain during the Civil War.
Friday, Feb. 18, 1910
Rev. William E. Bassett in respect to whose memory we are here
gathered together, was born in Andes, NY on January 16, 1840. So that at the
time of his death, which occurred on Saturday, Jan. 22, 1910 at 9 a.m., he was
aged 70 years and six days. While yet a growing lad the family remov
Illinois. It was here he received his early schooling.
At the outbreak of the Civil War he volunteered and served with credit
to himself and regiment during the whole campaign. Just before the close of
the war he was taken prisoner and was incarcerated in Andersonville for over
six months, when peace was declared, but of this he had no knowledge ti
after his liberation. After, he returned to Illinois and for some time taught
school. After his marriage he and his bride moved west to Nebraska. Here as
God gave him opportunity he engaged in preaching in the destitute fields
around him, and after preaching for some time was licensed to preach at
Emerson, Ne. on the 19th of April, 1889, by the Presbytery of Niobrar
He was ordained the following year as pastor of the United
Congregation of Nordon and Valentine and in the Box Butte Presbytery. H
residence was at the former of these places and here he labored faithfully for
ten years. Failing health compelled him to resign and he was honorably retired
by his Presbytery about four years ago, and since that time he has not been
able to preach, only occasionally.
He leaves behind to mourn his demise, his wife, also one daughter,
(Mrs. Thompson) who lives in Nebraska, a brother also lives in Chicago and a
sister in Michigan.
He came to the Mount Scott suburb of Portland, Oregon, about a year
ago and purchased the property on which he moved even for so short a time. He
was a model husband, a kind father, a true friend, a conscientious pastor, a
loyal and patriotic citizen, and an able and faithful minister of the N
Testament, earnest and successful in all his labors. Like his master he loved
little children. His end was peace. He was confined to his bed for less than a
week, when the God whose he was and whom he served called his good and
faithful servant to his reward.
The above obituary is reproduced in these columns for the reason that
Rev. Bassett was a highly respected and well known citizen in this part of the
state. Although Mr. Bassett did not reside in Valentine, he was well known by
the people, having freely gone in and out of the homes of many of the citizens
while serving as pastor of the Presbyterian church here.
