Fatal Accident to an Early Settler
Last Tuesday death came suddenly to Peter Bassett, of this township. That morning he had his help picking apples on his farm, and repeatedly cautioned them to take no risks. About 9 o?clock he went to the orchard and climbed up about twelve feet in a tree to help, when suddenly he pitched forward and fell to the ground, striking heavily on his face and head. At first those who saw him fall thought him dead. He was carried at once to the house and Dr. Burns hastily summoned. He partially regained consciousness for a short time but spoke only a few words and died of internal injuries a few hours after the fall. The funeral was held Thursday morning, at the Methodist church. Rev. A.M. White, of Chicago, one of his former pastors, officiating. The church was filled with the friends won by a worthy life. His sons from Nebraska were permitted to be in attendance with the rest of the family, at the funeral.
Peter Bassett was born in Andes, Delaware county, N.Y, almost seventy years ago. In 1844 he came to Buffalo Grove and his home has been here during the fifty years that have intervened.
