- From an old family history we have that Hiram's ancestors came from Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Hiram moved to Illinois from New York State but they disliked Illinois because it was cold and damp. They moved back to Indiana as early settlers, approximately 1825. They had to clear the land of trees, lived on wild game, fish, fruits, etc. Hiram was an old New England dickerer-trader. He was also involved in local politics. Another family excerpt refers to H.F. Bassett as "Hog Fat" Bassett because he weighed in excess of 300 lbs.

.... To go back to the Bassett family. These grandparents (H.F.
Bassetts) took my mother [May Vermilyea] when her mother died and she grew up
really as their own. She had visited at the grandparent's often and for quite
long periods of time before her mother passed away.....
Grandpa's sister, Mary Bassett Trobridge, had lived with them for many
years at that time. Her husband passed away as a young man. I don't know the
cause. She was a spinner and weaver, also a fine needle woman. So the Bassett
family became a family of women. Two old ladies and two grand-daughters. Aunt
Mary always washed the dinner dishes. She always saved her work. She didn't
rush to finish. One day she slipped, fell, and broke her hip. The doctor left
the weight on her foot too long and she was sort of a cripple afterwar
Hiram Bassett Obituary, 25 Aug 1881
Hiram Bassett died Aug. 25, 1881. He was stricken with paralysis in May
1878 and from that time until his death was helpless. He was born in Delaware
County, N.Y., April 2, 1807. In 1831 he was married to Lucia Barnum, who is
now his widow. Two children were born to them, one of whom Platt B., is now
living; the other, a daughter, married Joseph Vermilyea and died several years
ago. Her two daughters now reside with their grandmother in Albion. He came to
Noble County in 1836 and settled in York Twp. on the farm owned by him at the
time of death.
