A pioneer of York Township, Edwin B. Bassett was born in Birkshear County,
Massachusetts, a son of John and Hanna Bassett [Clark County Marriage Records,
Volume 2, Page 27, Line 44]. The 1880 Census shows an E.B. Bassett at the age
of 61. The Edwin Bassett farm was located in Section 9. From his son Byron's
marriage record, Edwin Bassett's first wife was the former Mary Furlong. Edwin
Bassett's second wife (whom he later divorced) was Sophronia Lawrence (nee
Windsor), Walter and Margaret Lawrence's mother. Therefore, he was a st
father to Margaret Benedict (nee Lawrence), Rollie Benedict's mother. Edwin
Bassett and Sophronia Lawrence were married on June 18, 1878. Two of Edwin's
sons, Edwin A. and Byron Bassett and his daughter-in-law, Carrie (nee Gardner)
Bassett are also buried in York Cemetery.
