      Henry Hulbert Ingersoll (January 20, 1844 - March 12, 1915), lawyer,
      was born in Oberlin, Ohio, the son of William and Samantha (Bassett)
      Ingersoll. After attending the public schools of his native town for several
      years, he entered, at the age of fifteen, the preparatory department of
      Oberlin College. In 1861, he joined the Federal army as a private in the
      eighth regiment of Ohio Volunteer infantry, and served in one campaign in west
      Virginia. Yielding to the wishes of his parents he left the army and entered
