At age 15, he started learning to be a blacksmith. In order to learn to keep books for the business, he attended school 2 months out of the year. He progressed to making wagons, carts and tools which were shipped south for sale. About 1830 he settled in Chicot County and farmed, raising cotton on a government land grant. By the time he married Martha, he had an extensive
plantation with 165 slaves.
