When 21, having decided to follow merchandising instead of farming, he came to New York, opening an office at 173 Broadway. This was the same building in which later he was a successful wholesale jewelry merchant for many years before he retired in 1897.
In 1862 he moved from Ballston to Brooklyn, New York. In 1870 he moved to Watertown, New York, which he made headquarters in his trade with country stores in surrounding counties. In 1884 he returned to Brooklyn, continuing
from his New York office his merchandising in Northern New York. In 1906 he removed to Buffalo where he died.

Former Ashfield Man Dies
Charles R. Bassett, 83, died in Buffalo, N.Y., Easter Sunday. He was born in Ashfield, the son of Francis Bassett and Mehitabel (Ford) Bassett of that town. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Levi Ford of Greenfield and Mrs. Rosa S. Ranney of Ashfield. He also leaves his widow and four children, a son , George B. Bassett and two daughters, Mrs. Charles M. Harrington and Mrs. Alfred H. Martin, all of Buffalo, and a son, Edward M. Bassett, of Brooklyn, N.Y. The burial was in Ashfield the 23d
