Mr. Alfred H. Bassett
Pittsfield, Mass.
My dear Sir, enclosed you will find Genealogy of the Bassett family as I have
it up to the year 1841. I regret that I cannot give it to you in better shape,
but have been so busy since I saw you that I could hardly get a moment's time.
I hope before many months to be able to trace out some other branches & to
have it much more complete. You will see by referring back that I am Jo
Henry, who was a son of Francis, who was a son of Lot, who was a son of
Elisha, who was a son of William who was a son of William. Consequently my
nephews can trace their ancestors back seven generations.
My grandfather Lot Bassett was born in Dennis, Mass. Jany 22, 1755. He
was a soldier of the revolution & three years in the service. He purchased a
farm in Ashfield in 1780. He married Deborah Howes of Dennis Jany 31, 1782 and
moved at once to Ashfield with his wife & worldly goods in an ox car
They raised a family of ten children and all lived to the age of
manhood. Three died in the prime of life - the other seven lived to a good old
age & only two of them now living.
His son William lived & died in Hawley. Thomas lived & died in
Plainfield, . My father Francis as well as the other brothers & sisters all
settled in Ashfield, where my father died May 18, 1876. Aged 80 years and 4
days. My mother and her nine children are all living as you will see by
referring to the record. My mother has seventeen grandchildren and four great
grandchildren living.
I think that my grandfather Lot and his brother Elisha (who also lived
and died in Ashfield) were undoubtedly your father's uncles.
While ransacking the garret in my grandfather's old house last summer I
found a Boston paper of the year 1784 with my great grandfather's name "Capt.
Elisha Bassett of Yarmouth" distinctly written upon it.
My sister Julia Ann married Henry S. Ramsey of Ashfield June 25, 1856.
They still reside there and have no children. My brother Francis Jr. married
Cordelia A. Swift of Ashfield June 28, 1849. They have four children and three
grandchildren. The said Cordelia died Nov. 4, 1867. Francis Jr. and his
children all reside in Brooklyn. My sister Mehetabel married Chauncey Bryant
of Greenfield July 8, 1852. They still reside in Greenfield. They have one
child and one grandchild. My sister Orvilla married Joseph Hall of Ashfield
Nov. 18, 1856 and resides in Hartford, Conn. They have one son. John Henry
married Sylvia H. Longley of Hawley Sept.8, 1859. They reside in New York City
and have no children. Emily Celestia married Thomas L. Eldridge of Hawley Oct
30, 1856. They reside in Hawley and have four children. Charles Ralph married
Elvira Rogers of Ballston, NY Sept. 17, 1860. They reside at Watertown, NY and
have five children. Ann Eliza married Levi Ford of Ashfield May 11, 1870. They
reside in Greenfield and have no children. Rosalind Sarah married Raph H. Ramey
of Ashfield in 1868. He died in Boston Oct 30, 1876. She resides in Ashfield
and has two children.
I might go on for hours giving names of my nephews and nieces,
children of your cousins but I fear I have wearied you alread
If I get any information, ancient and interesting, in the future, I
will give it to you.
After you have talked with your father in regard to this I would like
to know from which branch you sprang.
