My grandfather Harmon owned an excellent farm on Otter Creek Bow in
Rutland Vermont. He had two sons Oliver and William. Oliver my Father remained
on the farm and worked for his father until he was 26 years of age. His
brother William was educated at Castleton Vermont for a doctor he entered into
partnership with another person of Rutland and they started a drug store in
that place. My grandfather becoming security for their stock of drugs. The
partner finally absconded with money collected from sales and left my
grandfather to pay for the stock, a debt amounting to about $3000, which
he sold his farm in Vermont and sought a home in the West and arrived in
Licking County Ohio sometime in Spring of the year 1816.
My father purchased 100 acres of land in Licking County. But th
section of Country being so far in the interior of the State without any
outlet for farm products he with my Grandfather concluded to move into the
Northern part of the State. Accordingly they started on their journey in a few
days. In crossing the Tuskarawas River, Bassett, the husband of Aunt Anna my
Grandfathers oldest daughter, was drowned his boddy was found about 4 miles
below in the flood wood was disfigured by the buzzards and somewhat decayed.
The body was intered in the cemetery of the village of Coshocton. No other
event of importance occured in their journey to Painesville Geauga Co. Ohio
where they arrived in the Spring of the year 1816..............
