- William died at 7:00 a.m. on 8th of August 1922 in Berlin. He was 82 years of age.
This seems to be same William H. Bassett that married twice more and ended up back in Berlin, Wisconsin. A copy of his obituary is listed below, but it does not list this first family of children. There are only a few Bassetts born in Maine whose parents were born in New Hampshire, so all indications are that these two Williams are the same.
William lived in Tower and Duluth Minnesota and Berlin, Wisconsin (18 years).

William H. Bassett Passes away at Eighty-two Years
The Stars and Stripes fly at half mast over G.A.R. hall today. Another
veteran of the Civil War has answered his last roll call. Taps will soon be
sounded over the grave of one more old soldier removed from the thinning ranks
of the Grand Army of the Republic.
William H. Bassett, 82 years old, died at 7 o'clock this morning at
his home, 1068 Washington street. A complication of diseases and a general
breakdown caused the death of the aged man who has been confined to his bed
for the past six months. He has been unable to perform any hard labor for the
last five years, and became seriously ill last Thanksgiving. Since that time,
gradually failing health and old age made it only a question of time until the
Grim Reaper counted him among the toll.
Was Born in Maine.
The late William Bassett is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Bassett,
an adopted daughter, Bethel, a brother David, who resided in Haverhill, Mass.,
and a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Ressler, White Bear lake, Minnesota, by h
former marriage.
Had Fine War Record
He was born in Lowell, Maine, on May 27, 1840, the youngest child in a
family of thirteen. Five sisters and six brothers have preceded him in death.
Employed as a government surveyor, Mr. Bassett moved to Tower, Minn., and to
Duluth. He came to Berlin about eighteen years ago, and worked in the Sears-
Hitchcock tannery until disabled. On March 31, 1906, he was married to Bertha
Steinhagen at Horicon.
Mr. Bassett's war record was one of outstanding heroism. He enlisted
in Minneapolis with the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry and served three
years and seven days during the Civil war. He was wounded several times in
battle although not seriously. The Minnesota regiment fought in the battles of
Bull Run, Fair Oaks, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Haymarket,
and Gettysburg. At the 56th annual reunion of the regiment held recently, only
fourteen of the surviving forty veterans were able to attend.
Burial to Be Made in Oakwood.
Funeral services for the late William Bassett will probably be held
next Thursday, but arrangements are held up pending the arrival of Mrs.
Ressler in the city. The service will be held in the Methodist church, the
Rev. J.R. Bailey in charge. Burial is to be in Oakwood cemeter
