Mrs. Nettie Bassett
The death of Mrs. Nettie Bassett occurred at the home of her son, Roy
H. Bassett, Judson street, Friday at the noon hour, following a long and
wasting illness. Mrs. Bassett’s condition was such for some time previous to
her death that all hope had been abandoned by family and friends. Funer
services were conducted at the late home Sunday afternoon, the Rev. Fred O
Scurrah of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial was made at Evergreen.
Mrs. Bassett, whose maiden name was Nettie Herns, was born at Bucks
Bridge, N.Y., July 10, 1867, the daughter of Artemas and Elsie Herns. There
she continued to live until 1887 when she was joined in marriage with Fred
Bassett. They removed to Madrid where Mr. Bassett died six years later. About
seventeen years ago Mrs. Bassett and her son Roy removed to Canton where she
has lived during that period and up to the time of her death.
Mrs. Bassett was a capable accountant and bookkeeper and following her
coming to Canton was employed in the Barber & Bailey Insurance Agency for a
period of five years. Then she entered the office of C.Y. Fullington and
assisted in the handling of his insurance work for about eight years. About
two years ago she suffered an attack of influenza from which she never
recovered. She leaves surviving her one son, Roy H. Bassett, Secreta
Canton Savings & Loan Association, and a member of the firm of the Bassett &
Lewis real estate agency and her mother, Mrs. Elsie Herns.
Mrs. Bassett was a woman of fine christian character, a good mother,
homekeeper and friend. Though frail in body she was possessed of a spirit that
never faltered, whatever the task. Those in whose employ she spent years
reposed in her utmost confidence.
