Old Resident of Chicago Dies of Pneumonia
Interment at Oak Ridge Tomorrow
George Bassett, who came to Chicago in 1835, died on Friday night of
pneumonia at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Lillian Germain, 919 Walnut
street. Mr. Bassett was 85 years old. He was born in Windom County,
Connecticut, in 1815. The Chicago fire swept away his property, causing him a
loss of $85,000, and he was never able to recover from the disaster. Mr.
Bassett was a lifelong friend of Fernando Jones and a schoolmate of the late
Justice John D. Caton of the Illinois Supreme Court. Mr. Bassett's ancestors
were among the first settlers of New England. He was a member of the Old
Settlers' society. Interment will be at Oak Ridge tomorrow.
