Name William Bassett Born 17 Aug 1779 Keene Township, Cheshire County, New Hampshire Gender Male Died 1833 Notes - About 1827, William went to Keene, Coshocton County, Ohio. His wife
Elizabeth and their six daughters set out in 1828 to join him. They traveled
by wagon to Troy, New York; by barge to Buffalo; by boat on Lake Erie to
Cleveland and by wagon to Keene, Ohio. Martha and her older sister were
married on the same day some three months later. Elizabeth married Enos
Emerson and Martha married Sidney Smith. Martha Smith had nine children. In
1856 when her youngest child Leroy was eight years old, she set out with her
husband for a new home in Iowa. After his death three years later, she
continued on the farm with her daughter Hattie and the two younger sons
Christie (13) and Leroy (11). Christie later went away to school and into the
Methodist ministry, but Leroy remained with his mother on the farm. They built
a large barn, all of native lumber except the shingles, and about 1872 built a
large two story house. Six of her children lived in Iowa. Francis, who had
gone to California by way of Cape Horn during the gold rush days and later
settled at Salem, Oregon, came home twice to visit. Martha Smith died in 1885
and was buried in the Linn Grove Cemetery.
