Obituary, 2 Feb 1871
In Brookfield, N.Y., Jan. 18th, 1871, Lewis Bassett, in the 95th year of his
age. Bro. Bassett was a much esteemed member of the 1st Brookfield Church,
having united in 1821, during the ministry of Eld. Henry Clark. He was a
native of Rhode Island, and emigrated to Brookfield in 1803. During his long
residence here, he was known as a man of industrious habits, and of sterling
integrity. As a citizen, he valued and honored the right of the elective
franchise, rarely, if ever, failing to deposit his vote on election day. He
voted at the last presidential election - his last vote. As a husband a
father, he was faithful and beloved. He was invariably cheerful and affable.
He was a constant attendant upon the public means of grace, and cheerfully
bore his share in the common burdens of the church. For the last few years of
his life, the infirmities of age increased upon him, and for nearly thr
years previous to his death, he was unable to walk, from the effect of a fall.
Yet he was cheerful and resigned; a man of faith and prayer; a lover of
Christ, and of Christ's people... He was the father of thirteen childre
eight of whom are now living.
