Rufus Bassett, 11th child of William and Lydia (Smith) Bassett, was
born 6 Apr 1757 in Rochester, Massachusetts (RVR). He died 1830 in St.
Lawrence County, New York. He married Jedidah Handy, daughter of Zaccheus and
Susannah (Freeman) Handy, on 23 Jun 1776 at the 1st Congregational Church of
Rochester, Massachusetts. Jedidah Handy was born 11 May 1757 in Rochester,
Massachusetts. She died in 1813.
On 5 Mar 1797, a Baptist church was organized in Benson, Vermont, with
Rufus Bassett as an original member. Rufus served in the Revolutionary War as
a private in Capt. Hammond's Co., Col. Cottons Regt. in 1775 in Mass., Capt.
Dillingham's Co. in 1776 in Mass., as a sergeant in Capt. Wood's Co., Col.
Carpenter's Regt. in 1777 in Mass., and in Capt. Warren Cottle's Co. in
Vermont in 1780.
Rufus moved from Rochester, Massachusetts to Benson, Rutland County,
Vermont sometime between 1776 and 1790. He moved to Jay, Essex County, New
York sometime between 1797 and 1800. Jay, New York is situated at the foot of
Bassett Mountain, possibly named after Rufus. Rufus and Jedidah still lived in
New York during the census of 1810.
According to Flora Bassett Payson's letter dated 11 Aug 1917, Rufus
lived in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York where he died around 1830. He
is buried in a little cemetery between Potsdam and Canton, New York. Other
Bassetts are buried in Fairview Cemetery in Canton, St. Lawrence County, New
York. He is probably buried there or at the Evergreen Cemetery on the Potsdam
Road near Canton, St. Lawrence County, New York.
