  • Name Anna Walker
Birth 5 Sep 1755  Bilerica, Massachusetts Find all individuals with events at this location
    Gender Female
    Death Abt 1817
    Notes
    • Anna was the daughter of Joseph Walker Jr. and Elizabeth Walker of Billerica, MA, who married in 1739. (Her parents were related to each other). Her father died in 1764 when Anna was young. She moved north and married Silas Durgin on June 15, 1780, in Conway, NH, according to state marriage records.

It is not clear which Silas Durgin she married. There was one born in 1715, but this pairing seems unlikely because of the 40 year age difference. There was also another Silas, one born about 1754, who was a son of Joshua Durgin (and a nephew to the Silas born in 1715). Both of these men are mentioned in the History of Durham, New Hampshire (p. 161, see attached) and in the Durgin scroll, a genealogy on file at the New Hampshire Historical Society. It is likely she married the younger one.

Silas and Anna settled in Bartlett, NH. Anna's brother Timothy Walker (1758-1841) memorial 42689761 was living in Bartlett during the 1790 and 1800 census reports. This may be why Anna moved from Massachusetts to Bartlett, NH.

Anna and Silas had several children during the 1780s. Four of these children are mentioned in the baptism records of a North Conway church (see attached). Three (Eliza, Silas and Hannah) were baptized together in July 1786 so we don't know their individual birthdates. Daughter Ann was baptized in Sept. 1786. There is another possible son named Carlos who is not listed in the baptism records but is mentioned in the Durgin Scroll. This could be an error, though it is interesting that daughter Eliza would later name a son Carlos.

Children of Silas and Anna (Walker) Durgin include:

      - Eliza Durgin (1780-1863) bpt. July 1786, m1. Joel Page in 1802, m2. Dr. Eliphalet Lyman in 1832. She died in Victor, New York, in 1863.

      - Silas Durgin (Jr.) - (bpt. July 1786). He may be the Silas Durgin who died in 1846 and is buried in North Chelmsford, MA, but this is not confirmed.

      - Hannah Durgin - (bpt. July 1786)

      - Ann Durgin - (bpt. Sept. 1786) m. William White Jr. They are listed in Bartlett in the 1860 census as 74 years old.

Silas likely died between June 1786 (the month he was baptized as an adult) and Sept 1786 (the baptism of daughter Ann which only mentions mother Anna and not Silas). He is likely buried in Bartlett. Note: He is not buried in Wolfeboro, NH. This was an error that got perpetuated.

Anna then married James Bassett, originally of Raynham, MA, who came to the Bartlett area with a brother named David. James is listed in Bartlett during the 1790 census. it is likely that the children listed with him, though not named, were from Anna's first marriage. James died in 1797. In the 1800 census in Bartlett, Anna is listed as "wid. Ann Basset" and had a household of nine. She died about 1817 according to the attached book excerpt. Please update this if you know of a public document that shows her exact death date, location and burial place.

Children of Anna and James Bassett:

      - Joseph Bassett (1791-1884) m. Sally Smith

      - Belinda Bassett (1795-1834) m. Jonathan Tasker of Bartlett

      - Lydia L. Bassett (1796-1880) m1. John Stanton, m2. William S. Hart

Note: Of the above, Joseph's son (Thomas Bassett) married Lydia's daughter (Eleanor Stanton).

      Other possible but unconfirmed children:

      - David Bassett

      - George Bassett (1798-1854) buried Turner, ME, m1. Thursa/Thirza Merrill of Livermore, ME, m2. Nancy Wing

      - Simeon Bassett m. Hannah Gilbert 1807
