Woman charged for killing ill husband
VIRGINIA BEACH (AP) – A woman accused of shooting her elderly husband to death to end his suffering from Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases was indicted on a voluntary manslaughter charge.
But Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert J. Humphreys said yesterday that Florencetta Bassett, 67, probably won’t serve prison time if convicted, even though the charge carries a sentence of up to 10 years.
Investigators said Bassett fired a handgun into the chest of her 70-year-old husband, William Dale Bassett Jr., on April 26 at the couple’s home She then called police.
Bassett, a registered nurse, was taken to a mental health facility for evaluation after the shooting. She is still there.
Bassett, a retired Marine Corps colonel, will be buried tomorrow at Arlington National Cemetery.
“It’s a sad case,” Humphreys said. “But what she did was clearly illegal.”

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Col. William D. Bassett, Jr. USMC (Ret.); two sisters, Bertha Poddany and Ruth Kennedy; and her parents, Ray and Catherine Carter.
She is survived by a daughter, Karen Wilson; four sons, Steven, William III, Richard and Michael Bassett; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Services will be private in Arlington National Cemetery, where she will be interred with her husband.
