R.C. ?Bob? McClymonds (1923-2017)
R. C. "Bob" McClymonds passed peacefully from this world to be with Our Heavenly Father on March 4. Bob was born in College Springs, Iowa, on November 10, 1923 to William and Mary McClymonds. His early childhood was spent in College Springs and Clarinda, Iowa. At the age of 8, Bob moved west with his family to Tulelake, CA, and became part of that region's first homesteading community. He grew up on the family homestead, attended a one-room Homesteader's elementary school, and he sold magazine subscriptions to help the family and to finance his own subscription to National Geographic Magazine, which allowed him to dream of far-away places filled with adventure. Bob later graduated from Tulelake High School where he was the student body president his senior year. Along with his best friend, Neale Welsch, Bob attended Sacramento Junior College until 1942, when Bob enlisted in the United States Navy. After completing his midshipman's training in Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Diego, Bob served in the Pacific theater as a Lieutenant JG Torpedo Officer on the destroyer USS Caldweld DD 605. Bob's service took him from the sandy beaches of Hawaii, to the Philippines, through a typhoon off the coast of Okinawa, and up to the gates of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan as part of the occupation force. After the war ended, Bob was delighted that his ship returned to Boston by way of the Panama Canal. Upon returning home, Bob completed his college education at USC, where he earned a degree in Political Science and was honored with membership in the Skull and Dagger Society for his work as President of the Greater University Committee. Bob then returned to farming with his father until he met the love of his life, Margaret "Peggy" Bassett, of Reno, NV. Bob and Peggy were married in July 1953. The newlywed couple homesteaded in Rupert, ID for several years, living in a two-room block homestead house they built themselves that was an extension of the tractor shed. Love and a pot-bellied stove kept them warm, but the trips to the outhouse were a bit frosty. Happily for their children, who appreciated indoor plumbing, Bob and Peggy later moved to Carmichael, CA where they raised their family. Bob was a Real Estate Broker and Appraiser in the Sacramento area, working well into his 70's. He and Peggy were gratified to see their four children all graduate college, establish their own careers and households, and claim each other as their best friends. After Peggy's death in 2007, Bob continued to enjoy his friends at La Bou, his neighbors, and his children and grandchildren. During the last years of his life, Bob was cared for by his children. He enjoyed each day, appreciated every act of kindness, and never lost his sense of wonder or his sense of humor. He was fond of saying that "Everyday is a victory when we help others, and when we learn something new. Onward and upward. Each day is a victory." Bob is survived by his four children: Mary McClymonds Hargrove (husband Phillip) of Millington, TN; Susan McClymonds of Pasadena, CA; Robert McClymonds of Sierra Valley, CA; and William McClymonds of Yuba City, CA. He is also survived by five grandchildren: William Hirsch of Millington, TN; Timothy and Daniel Martinez of Pasadena, CA; Jon and Bailey McClymonds of Yuba City, CA. Services will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 2:30 pm at: Living Hope Community Church, 5301 Dewey Dr. Fair Oaks, CA.
