Marine Officer Wins Promotion
William D. Bassett Is Now Colonel
Promotion to the rank of colonel was announced by the United States marine corps this week for William D. Bassett, son of William Bassett of Lovelock. Colonel Bassett, a veteran officer, is now on duty with a marine corps unit overseas, it was learned at the local recruiting station.
Enlisting in the marines in November, 1917, Colonel Bassett was appointed a second lieutenant the following year and was honorably discharged in 1919 with the temporary rank of first lieutenant.
He returned to the corps as a second lieutenant in 1921, and was promoted to first lieutenant in 1922, captain in 1933, major in 1937 and lieutenant colonel in 1941.
Assigned to marine corps aviation in 192, Colonel Bassett since that time has seen duty at Guam, the Phillipines, in China, Haiti, at several bases in this country and aboard the USS Tennessee.
Mrs. Bassett and their two children reside in San Diego.
