Donald Bassett (picture included)
Donald A. Bassett, 70, 302 N. 3rd St., Monticello, died at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Tioga Pines Living Center, Monticello. He had been in the center four days, and in ill health for several months.
He was born Dec. 17, 1917 in Macomb, Ill. His parents were Herbert and Blanche Worley Bassett. Bassett was married on Dec. 28, 1940, in Davenport, Iowa, to Ida Mae Whitmore who survives.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello, and sang in the chancel choir of the church.
Before joining the church in Monticello, Bassett was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rock Island, Ill. He was a deacon of the church and Sunday school teacher for several years.
He was also a member of the Air Force Association, and committee member of the Retired Officers Association at Grissom Air Force Base, Peru.
Bassett also was a member of the U.S. Civil Engineers, the Illinois University Alumni Association, and the American Legion in Monticello. He was a member in the boat club of Rock Island also. He was a Boy Scout leader in Monticello and Rock Island for several years.
Bassett joined the Air Force in 1940, where he was a flight engineer on B-29 airplanes. He was stationed at several air force bases during World War II, including Keesler Field in Biloxi Miss., and Gulfport Field Miss. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of captain. He later joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves, from which he retired as lieutenant colonel.
Bassett graduated at age 20 from University of Illinois in 1937 with a degree in civil engineering. He worked for J.I. Case and Company, Rock Island, from 1947 to 1953. He came to Monticello in 1954, where he worked for RCA. He later worked at Grissom AFB where he worked as a civil engineer for 12 years.
He moved to Indianapolis in 1973 where he worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development until he retired from there in 1979.
During the past year, Bassett drove part time for Monticello Tank. He owned a farm in the Idaville area.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Donald A. "Guy" Bassett Jr., of Monticello, two daughters, Donna Mae Rundell, of Bloomfield, Colo., and Joan Campbell, of Monticello; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
One son, one brother and one sister are deceased.
Service will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miller-Voorhis Funeral Home with the Rev. William Weckerly and the Rev. Lowell Ragains officiating. Graveside rites will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fair View Cemetery in Tonica, Ill.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
